When the fall rolls around I can’t wait to bring home my favorite apples from the market to make all my favorite apple desserts and snacks, including a batch of these crunchy apple chips!

They are light, sweet, and the warming flavor of cinnamon pairs perfectly with the apple’s delicate sweetness.

Some of my other favorite healthy ways to serve apples are in this vegan coleslaw recipe, a breakfast quinoa bowl, and these stuffed baked apples.

What Goes Into This Recipe

You don’t need much to make a batch of baked apple chips! A few spices, sugar, and apples. Let’s take a look.

ingredients for Baked Apple Chips against a whtie surface
  • Apples: Choose firm, medium-sized apples with a sweet flavor and crisp texture. Try to pick out apples that don’t have any visible bruises or soft spots.
  • Sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg: This combo adds warming sweetness to these baked apple chips.

How To Make Crispy Apple Chips

Keep scrolling to the recipe card for the complete list of ingredients with measurements and recipe instructions!

  • 1) Preheat the oven to 225 degrees F (107 degrees C). Slice the apples into very thin rings. I leave the core in because I think it makes a prettier apple chip, but you can remove it if you like.
  • 2) Place the apple rings on a lined baking sheet in a single layer.
  • 3) Mix together sugar and spices in a small bowl.
  • 4) Sprinkle the sugar-spice mixture over the apple rings.
  • 5) Place the baking sheet in the oven. Baking time will depend on the thickness and water content of your apple slices. They should be done in 1 ½ to 2 hours. You’ll know they’re finished when they’re crisp. Enjoy!

Expert Tips

  • Thin slices are best! If you slice the apples more than 1/8 inch thick, they will still be delicious, but they won’t be as crisp.
  • Enjoy these oven-baked apple chips chopped on top of salads, on top of oatmeal, and, of course, right out of the container!
  • Use crisp apples and avoid soft apples such as Red Delicious and McIntosh apples. They aren’t that great for cooking and definitely don’t work as well as other crisp varieties.

FAQs

Are homemade apple chips good for you?

Yes, they are a healthier option when compared to other types of chips such as potato and tortilla chips. Even better, these apple chips are baked in the oven instead of fried, making them an even better healthy alternative.

What apples are best for apple chips?

Any sweet-crisp apple will do nicely. Pink Lady, Gala, Fuji, and Honeycrisp are four widely available ones. Consider trying a mix of apples for a nice variety of chips.

How do you cut apples into chips?

A mandolin slicer works great for achieving paper-thin, uniform slices. However, if you don’t have one, use a sharp knife and be patient with yourself!

How long can you keep apple chips?

Store your crunchy apple chips in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.

Can I bake them quicker at a higher temperature?

Baking your apple chips at a low heat is the first key to crispy success.

  1. Hi. Just wondering about the sugar. The picture shows brown sugar yet the recipe calls for white sugar. Can either be used?
