Halloween is right around the corner and these hard candy apples are the perfect treat. Kids get their sugar fix and parents get the satisfaction of feeding their kids fresh fruit. Win-win!
- 8 granny smith apples
- 1/2 cup light corn syrup
- 1 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/3 cup water
- 1/4 tsp red food color (optional)
- 8 skewers
- toppings of your choice (nuts, chocolate, seeds, sprinkles, etc)
Stick the skewers in the center of the apples and set aside.
In a medium pot and over medium-low heat, add all ingredients and stir well. It should begin to boil after a few minutes, let sit but check occasionally with a spoon for a slightly thick consistency.
Once the candy mixture is able to stick to the spoon with a thick consistency, take the skewered apples and fully dip them, as photographed.
As quickly as possible (before the candy hardens), dip them in tasty toppings of your choice. I chose nuts, chocolate and sprinkles.
After the fun of decorating and displaying, I usually grab a knife and cut them into tasty candy apple slices. They're absolutely delicious!
