Oven-Baked Sesame Fries Ingredients

  • Potatoes – You can use russet or yukon gold, unpeeled and cut into wedges. You can use any type of potato, preferably with a high starch content which is ideal for baking. You can also use sweet potatoes as an alternative.
  • Cooking oil – You can use avocado, grape seed, sunflower, etc.
  • Sesame seeds – We used white sesame seeds for this recipe.
  • Potato starch – This is optional, but it will make the fries extra crispy, so use it if you have it. 1 Tablespoon should be enough.
  • Nutritional yeast – Another optional ingredient, but also highly recommended if you like your fries to have a ‘cheesy’ and savory flavor. You can also use vegan parmesan as a substitute.
  • Salt and Black pepper – To taste.

Tips when Making Oven-Baked Sesame Fries

  • Make sure that the potato wedges are uniform in size, so they bake evenly in the oven.
  • If the sesame seeds are not sticking to the wedges, add a bit more oil. Make sure you do not add too much, though, or your potatoes will get soggy.
  • Place the potatoes evenly spaced in the pan. The more room between the wedges, the better as the hot air can circulate better and make them super crisp. If you have a small pan, you can bake in batches instead.
  • The baking time may vary depending on how thick your wedges are. Test if they are baked through by sticking a toothpick into the thickest part of the wedge. If it pierces through easily, you can take them off the oven.
  • Let the baked fries rest on the pan for a few minutes before transferring them to a serving plate.
  • You can add more flavor to your fries by adding your preferred herbs and spices. Paprika, chili powder, garlic or onion powder, and parsley are some good choices.

 Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Can I use my air-fryer instead? Absolutely! You can try my Crispy Garlic Baked Potato Wedges recipe for the air-fryer cooking instructions.
  2. Can I peel the potatoes? Yes, you can. It is entirely up to you. We like ours with the peel on because it adds more texture and lessens prep time.
  3. Can I slice them into thinner strips instead of wedges? No problem! You can use the classic cut; however, make sure you reduce the baking time because they will cook faster.

Serving and Storing Sesame Fries

These fries are always best served right away warm from the oven to enjoy the crisp outer layer and tender potato flesh inside. If you have any leftovers, place them in an air-tight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days. You can reheat them in the oven or air-fryer for best results.

Try these other variations of fries that are also 100% vegan and easy to make!

  1. Baked Zucchini Fries – This oil-free baked zucchini fries recipe yields veggie fries that are wonderfully crisp on the outside with a tender middle, perfect as a healthier alternative to deep-fried fries.
  2. Ketchup Baked Home Fries – These homemade fries take ketchup and potatoes to the next level; by coating the taters in garlic, spices, and ketchup before you bake them, you end up with a crispy, flavorful coating you won’t be able to forget.
  3. Oven-Baked Sweet Potato Fries – Try this easy and healthy option next time you cook up sweet potatoes. They will be a lot softer compared to deep-fried fries or fries baked with an oil coating. But they are great tasting, I promise!
