  • Apples: Any fresh apples of choice will work. Red Delicious, Granny Smith, Gala apples, Honeycrisp, Pink Lady and Fuji apples are great choices.
  • Dairy-free chocolate: Use your favorite dairy-free chocolate. Vegan chocolate chips or chocolate chunks will melt the fastest.
  • Granola: We love these apple snacks topped with store-bought or homemade granola. If you’re interested in making your own, check out our Easy Peanut Butter Granola.

Topping Ideas

Don’t be afraid to switch it up from the granola. Here are a few simple and fun toppings to add to the apple slices:

  • Nut butter: Swap out the plant-based chocolate for a creamy nut butter like almond butter, hazelnut butter, peanut butter, or sunflower seed butter if nut-free.
  • Crushed nuts or seeds
  • Hemp seeds
  • Coconut flakes: Desiccated coconut or smaller coconut flakes will stick on best.
  • Vegan caramel sauce
  • Dried fruit
  • Dairy-free sprinkles or vegan chocolate chips
  • Cinnamon
  • Pumpkin pie spice

How to Make Apple Snacks with Granola

  • 1) Slice the apples into spears or any desired shape.
  • 2) Melt the vegan chocolate chips in the microwave in 45-second increments, stirring in between. Be careful not to burn the plant-based chocolate – it’s easy to do!
  • 3) Dip the apple spears into the hot vegan chocolate, then immediately dip them in granola of choice.
  • 4) Serve immediately or place the apple snacks in the fridge and chill until the vegan chocolate is hardened again.

Recipe FAQs

Is this snack gluten-free?

If you are gluten-free, make sure to use gluten-free granola or alternative gluten-free toppings. Not all granola is gluten-free because oats are often cross-contaminated. Always check the packaging or make your own at home with gluten-free certified ingredients.

Can I turn this apple snack into apple nachos?

Healthy apple nachos is a great option and variation of this snack. To make apple nachos, cut the apples into thin slices, spread the apple slices on a large plate in a single layer and drizzle the dairy-free chocolate and granola overtop, similar to making regular nachos.

What is the best type of apple to use?

This depends on your preference. If you like tart apples, use Granny Smith or McIntosh. If you prefer sweet apples, use Honeycrisp or Fuji.

How do I prevent my apples from turning brown?

Aside from enjoying immediately, you can squeeze a bit of fresh lemon juice over the apples. The acid in the lemon juice helps prevent the fruit from oxidizing. Note that this will effect the flavor and can be very sour.

Top Tips

  • Use cold apples. They make the best refreshing snack!
  • Get the kids involved. Kids love snacking and this is a perfect example of a quick, healthy, and filling snack for little munchers. They can easily participate while preparing it – a great way to make memories!
  • Use plain granola. A granola that doesn’t have a lot of “extras” like nuts, fruit, seeds, etc. will stick better to the vegan chocolate.

Can I make these easy apple snacks ahead of time?

You can, but they are best enjoyed fresh. Apples oxidize quickly once cut and exposed to air and will not keep well for more than a day in the fridge. For the best results, make the amount of apple snacks you want to snack on at the moment, and prep snacks that keep better like Hummus, Rosemary Crackers, Peanut Butter Oatmeal Balls, and Roasted Pumpkin Seeds for meal prepped snacks instead.
