Smoky Coconut Bacon

I keep hearing of coconut bacon and decided to try making my own. After consulting a couple recipes for the general idea, I came up with this – savory, smoky flakes perfect for topping a salad, making a delightful BLT (CBLT?) or tossing into a vegan frittata!

If you don’t have coconut oil or coconut sugar on hand, the substitutions work  nicely.


  • 3 1/2 C. unsweetened coconut (preferably large-flake)
  • 2 T. light soy sauce
  • 1 T. anchovy-free Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 T. liquid smoke
  • 1 T. melted coconut oil (or canola oil)
  • 2 T. coconut sugar (or brown sugar)


Step 1

Preheat oven to 350F.

Step 2

Pour coconut into a medium mixing bowl. Add remaining ingredients and mix well, until coconut is consistently coated.

Step 3

Pour coconut onto a large baking sheet, along with any remaining marinade, distributing evenly on pan. Bake for about 15 minutes, stirring every five minutes, until bacon is browned. (Keep a close eye because coconut goes from golden to blackened quickly!)

Step 4

Remove from oven, allow to cool completely and store in an airtight container.
