The Ingredients

ingredients for Chocolate Dipped Strawberries measured out on a white surface
  • Vegan chocolate: Use high-quality chocolate (made with cocoa butter, like Ghirardelli)- dark, white, or milk chocolate-dipped strawberries.

For Stuffed Strawberries

There are several simple and delicious ways to stuff large strawberries:

  • Vegan chocolate spread (aka dairy-free Nutella)
  • Biscoff
  • Peanut butter or almond butter
  • Dairy-free chocolate ganache
  • Vegan cheesecake filling (vegan cream cheese + powdered sugar + vanilla)

Use a small melon baller or paring knife to remove the stem and core, then a piping bag/small spoon to add the filling (aim for ยฝ-1tsp of filling per large berry).

Step 1: Rinse and thoroughly dry the berries, then line a large baking tray with parchment paper/ wax paper. In a small microwave-safe bowl/mug, microwave the vegan chocolate in 30-second increments, stirring between, until melted and smooth.

Step 2: Carefully, either by holding the stem or placing a toothpick in them, dip the strawberries one at a time in the melted vegan chocolate, swirling to coat, then leaving any excess to drip off. Transfer to the prepared tray. Refrigerate for 15-20 minutes until set, then remove from the fridge and enjoy!

Alternatively, use a double-boiler method to melt the chocolate (learn how to melt chocolate here)

If the vegan chocolate thickens/cools between strawberries, pop it back in the microwave for 10-15 seconds (or leave it on the double-boiler).

Enjoy the vegan chocolate-coated strawberries as a snack/dessert, to garnish plant-based cupcakes and cakes, or as part of an edible arrangement.

FAQs

Can you freeze strawberries dipped in non-dairy chocolate?

Technically, yes, for up to 3 months. However, theyโ€™re better eaten in a semi-frozen state, as theyโ€™ll sweat and become mushy upon thawing.

What is the best non-dairy chocolate for these chocolate dipped strawberries?

I prefer vegan semi-sweet/milk or bittersweet/dark chocolate โ€“ particularly the latter- as its bitterness pairs perfectly with the berry sweetness. However, you could use non-dairy white chocolate.

Itโ€™s best to use vegan chocolate made with cocoa butter (couverture chocolate, which contains higher cocoa butter levels, is even better for a super shiny shell).

Avoid vegan chocolate chips that contain stabilizers to prevent smooth melting. I use dairy-free chocolate and have had no issues.

Pro Recipe Tips

  • Use fresh strawberries: Ensure theyโ€™re room temperature and thoroughly dry (otherwise the vegan chocolate may seize) for the best results.
  • For a crisp, smooth, snappy coating: Temper the plant-based chocolate.
  • To avoid condensation: Only chill the strawberries until set (15-20 minutes).

How to Decorate Chocolate Covered Strawberries

DIY chocolate-dipped strawberries can be adapted for any occasion โ€“ Valentineโ€™s Day, Christmas, Halloween, baby shower, date night, etc.

  • Vegan chocolate drizzle (in the same or a contrasting type)
  • Marbled vegan chocolate (swirl two types of non-dairy chocolate before dipping)
  • Mini vegan chocolate chips/sprinkles (either loosely sprinkled or dipped into)
  • Chopped nuts (i.e., almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts, pistachios, etc.)
  • Crushed cookies (like Oreos, Biscoff, graham crackers, OR pretzels)
  • Crushed candy (like peppermints, crushed vegan M&Mโ€™s, etc.)
  • Freeze-dried berries
  • Coconut (shredded or flakes โ€“ raw or toasted)
  • Edible glitter/gold leaf for a touch of elegance (add over set vegan chocolate)
  • Flaky sea salt

You could also color white chocolate with oil-based colorings. I.e., pink chocolate for Valentineโ€™s/baby showers, etc. Red for Christmas, etc.

Storage Instructions

Itโ€™s best to enjoy non-dairy chocolate-dipped strawberries within 24 hours, though leftovers will store in a single layer in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days.

Avoid stacking them if you donโ€™t want to blemish the non-dairy chocolate coating.

  1. 5 stars
I made these as an after-school treat for my kiddos’ first day of school. I
happened to have raspberries and unsweetened coconut flakes on hand, so I dipped the raspberries in the extra chocolate and sprinkled the coconut flakes on some of the fruit. They are absolutely delicious! I know my children; they’re going to love them, too. Thanks for the simple, delicious recipe!

  2. A simple and delicious favorite of mine! I love a dessert that is simple, healthy and delicious. Thank you!
