Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Okay, I’ll admit it, I may have spent so long planning the perfect sweet treats for Halloween goodie bags and trick-or-treaters, decorating, and carving jack-o-lanterns, that I now have no energy to spend hours in the kitchen making savory party bites…. But that’s where super simple recipes like these mini spider pizza bagel bites have come to my rescue. They’re so easy, made with just 4 base ingredients (and plenty of space for customization) in 20 minutes – they practically make themselves.

The Ingredients

Top Tip: Want a lighter version? Add olive spiders to my Portobello mushroom pizza bites.

Optional Toppings

  • Basil: Sprinkle over the spider pizza bites for extra flavor – but only add it after to retain its vibrant green. Dried basil can be added before or after.
  • Vegetables: Boost the flavor/nutrients of the vegan bagel bites with finely minced sauteed mushrooms, bell pepper, sun-dried tomato, corn, caramelized onion, etc.
  • Protein: Add finely chopped vegan ham, vegan tofu bacon, crispy baked tofu/tempeh, shredded vegan chicken, etc.
  • Spice: Add chili sauce/powder to the sauce, or sprinkle red pepper flakes over the top.
  • Herbs: Sprinkle the bagels with a little dried oregano, basil, or Italian seasoning.
  • Pesto sauce: Drizzle this vegan basil pesto on top!

How to Make Mini Bagel Spider Pizzas

Prepare these super simple Halloween bagel bites in just a handful of steps.

Step 1: First, preheat the oven to 350°F (175 °C) and slice each mini bagel in half.

Step 2: Spoon a moderate layer of pizza sauce or marinara over each bagel half. Sprinkle with the vegan cheese and (if using) minced basil and veggies, then place a whole black olive in the center hole of each bagel half.

Top Tip: Depending on the veggies you use, spread them beneath the vegan cheese so they don’t ruin the spider aesthetic.

Step 3: Then, thinly slice the olives lengthwise or into round slices, then half moons, and place 3-4 pieces (4 for accurate spiders) on either side of the whole olive for the spider legs.

Step 4: Bake the spider bagel bites for 10-12 minutes or until crispy with melty vegan cheese and tender veggies. Finally, remove them from the oven, leave them to cool for a few minutes, and serve. Enjoy!

Optionally, add the top/bottom of an olive above the spider as a ‘head.’

For mummy bagel pizza bites: Add marinara sauce, layer with thin strips of vegan cheese as the mummy wrappings, and add thin olive slices as the eyes.

FAQs

Can I air-fry the pizza bagel bites?

Sure! Air-fry the mini spider pizzas for 6-8 minutes at 350°F (175°C) or until they are crispy and melty on top.

Can I use large bagels or pizza crust?

Sure! I’ve made spider pizza with regular bagels, English muffins, and frozen pizza bases (mini or regular). I usually increase the amount of olive spiders as preferred. For large pizzas, try a mix of black and green olive spiders.

What are other decorative Halloween pizza ideas?

You can cut thin slices of vegan cheese into one large or several small ghosts, a skull head (using olive bits as the eyes), or pumpkin facial features (bell pepper also works). You can also create a vampire with black olive hair and eyes and bell pepper fangs. Alternatively, cut mushroom halves into skulls to top the Halloween bagels.

Pro Recipe Tips

  • For larger pizza bagels: Use regular bagels if preferred.
  • To avoid soggy pizza bites: Lightly toast (or cook for 3-4 minutes) the bagels before adding the sauce. Take it a step further with a light layer of olive oil to form a barrier.
  • Experiment with toppings: You can add finely diced veggies/protein, but spread them beneath the vegan cheese to avoid distracting from the ‘spider.’
  • Let them cool slightly: Marinara sauce and hot vegan cheese can be somewhat molten-like right out of the oven. Give them a few minutes to cool.

Storage Instructions

Fridge: In an airtight container for 3-4 days.

Freezer: Flash freeze the vegan pizza bagels until solid, then store in a Ziplock/Stasher for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight or reheat from frozen.

Reheat: In an oven or air fryer at 350°F/175 °C until warm. A microwave (30-45 seconds) works, but the the Halloween pizza bagels will be soft.
