Pupusa Party!

This was my first attempt at making these beloved little gems and they were relatively easy; I just left the kitchen a little messy after toughing everything with my masa hands.  You can fill them with most anything. Usually they are topped with a pickled cabbage slaw, but one new recipe a day is about all I can handle. I topped mine with some salsa and radishes.

Pupusa are great little pockets stuffed with whatever your heart desires.

  • 2 cups of masa
  • 1 ½ cups of warm water or just enough for it to hold together
  • 2 teaspoons of garlic powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons of salt
  • ½ can of refried beans
  • ½ can of corn
  • ½ of a yellow onion, diced
  • 1 package of seitan, optional


  • heat seitan (I like mine a little burned), then add onions saute about 5 minutes
  • mix in corn and beans then set aside
  • add the garlic powder and salt to the masa and then add enough water to have it all hold together
  • take a small handful of masa and flatten it out big enough to make a little bowl with it in your hand, then add some filling, pinch up the sides up and pat flat
  • use a non stick pan or a bit of oil and cook on each side about 4 minuets or until it gets golden brown


Usually topped with pickled veggies, I just used thinly sliced radishes this time. Use what you have to add some crunch.
