The Ingredients

Below are the basic ingredients to make vegan tortilla pizza, but we’ve also provided a ton of variations and topping ideas to help you make these pizzas your own with ingredients you may already have.

  • Tortillas: Use your favorite tortillas. Try whole wheat tortillas, flour tortillas, or corn tortillas for easy gluten-free tortillas. You can also make your own Homemade Flour Tortillas.
  • Vegan pizza sauce: Homemade pesto is our favorite pizza base for these tortilla pizzas. To make it, you’ll need spinach, basil, nuts or seeds, garlic, salt, lemon juice, and nutritional yeast if you like a ‘cheesy flavored’ pesto.
  • Potatoes: Thinly sliced Yukon gold or red potatoes will cook quickly and add a heartiness to the vegan pizza.
  • Mushrooms: Any mushrooms will work. Use your favorite.
  • Onions: Thinly sliced onions of choice will add a caramelization and subtle sweetness.
  • Chives: Emphasizes the onion flavor and can be cooked or added raw on top. Green onions are a good alternative.
  • Spinach: Any leafy greens of choice will work. Baby spinach is our favorite.
  • Peppers: Any bell peppers or hot peppers will work. Try red peppers, green peppers, jalapeños, or Anaheim peppers.
  • Avocado: This vegan tortilla pizza is made without vegan cheese and instead topped with creamy avocado. It adds a similar texture of smooth cheese yet keeps this pizza whole foods plant-based.

Variations and Topping Ideas

  • Use another pizza sauce: Instead of our homemade pesto spread, try regular pizza sauce, marinara sauce, plain tomato sauce from a can or even hummus for hummus tortilla pizzas (use our Mediterranean Hummus Pizza for inspiration!). For a garlicky base, try our Creamy Vegan Garlic Sauce.
  • Add dairy-free cheese: If you prefer your pizzas with added vegan cheese, sprinkle on your favorite store-bought shreds or a homemade cashew or tofu mozzarella
  • Add your favorite vegetables: Here are a few ideas to help you get inspired.

How to Make a Vegan Tortilla Pizza

  • 1) Make the pesto by pulsing the spinach, basil, nuts or seeds, garlic, nutritional yeast, salt, water and lemon juice together in a food processor or blender until smooth and creamy.
  • 2) Pour the vegan pesto sauce on top of the tortilla, then spread it out evenly with a spoon. For best results, use a nice thick layer.
  • 3) Top with your veggies of choice.
  • 4) Place the tortilla on the baking tray and bake for 10 minutes, or until the tortilla starts to brown around the edges and the pizza toppings are soft and cooked through.
  • 5) Top your pizza with your favorite flavors like salt, pepper, avocado, etc., then cut into slices or roll it up into a pizza burrito. Enjoy!

Recipe FAQs

Will tortilla pizza keep well?

Tortilla pizza is best enjoyed fresh, but can be refrigerated. For the best results, keep leftover pizza slices in the fridge in an airtight container or carefully wrap in foil. Enjoy within 3 days while chilled or lightly reheat in an air fryer, toaster oven, or on a baking sheet in the oven until warm again.

Why is my pizza soggy?

If your pizza is soggy, this is likely a sign of too heavy of toppings. While you do want to use a generous amount of sauce, you don’t want to overdo it, especially with more delicate tortillas like flour tortillas.

Can I use a toaster oven to make my pizza?

We haven’t tested it, but it should work. Bake for about 6-8 minutes instead as toaster ovens often cook food faster than conventional ovens.

What can I serve these tortilla pizzas with?

Pair your vegan tortilla pizzas with your favorite vegan sides and appetizers like a simple side salad, Summer Pasta Salad, or this Watermelon Mint Salad for a sweet twist!

Top Recipe Tips

  • Use a mandolin for the toppings. Since a vegan tortilla pizza is similar to an extra thin pizza crust, the veggies need to be sliced very thinly or they won’t cook through completely in 10 minutes. A mandolin can help cut veggies paper thin and uniformly.
  • Cool on cooling racks. This will prevent the bottom of the tortilla from becoming soggy.
  • Go easy on the toppings. If the toppings are too heavy, they won’t cook through well and will make the tortilla more likely to go soggy.
  • Cooking on a baking sheet is a must. Tortilla crusts are flimsy and need the support of a flat surface.

This Vegan Tortilla Pizza is a fast, easy way to enjoy pizza any night of the week. Swap the classic pizza crust for your favorite tortillas and make your own homemade vegan pizzas in 20 minutes or less.

Ingredients

  • 1 tortilla of choice

Pesto:

  • ½ cup of spinach (or any greens will work)
  • ¼ cup of fresh basil (or parsley, mint or cilantro if you're feeling adventurous!)
  • ¼ cup of nuts or seeds of choice (I used pumpkin, but sunflower, walnuts, pine nuts, pecans, and almonds would also all work well)
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 2 tablespoons of nutritional yeast (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon of salt
  • â…“ cup of water
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice

Toppings:

  • Thinly sliced potato, mushroom, onion, corn, chives, spinach, greens, peppers, avocado, broccoli, etc

Instructions

  • Preheat oven or toaster oven to 400 degrees. Make your pesto by combining all ingredients in a blender or food processor and processing for 30 seconds (scraping down sides a few times), until creamy.
  • Pour onto the tortilla and spread out evenly with a spoon, it should be a nice thick layer of pesto.
  • Top with your thinly sliced veggies, though leave the avocado off until it comes out of the oven. Place on a baking tray and bake for 10 minutes or until the tortilla starts to brown and get crispy and the toppings are soft and cooked through.
  • Remove from oven and top with avocado if using, salt, pepper, and any other favorite flavors. Cut into slices or roll up like a burrito. Enjoy!
